Looking at Early Christian Art: Ivory Panels in the British Museum

Looking at Early Christian Art: Ivory Panels in the British Museum

The British Museum contains many wonders, but you may have missed this astonishing set of carved ivory panels made in 5th century Rome, illustrating scenes from Christ’s Passion and Resurrection.

They are amongst the earliest representations of this subject. What do they tell us about early Christianity? What were they for? Who made them - and for whom?

Join us for a discussion about these fascinating items.

From my Walls

“From my Walls”

I hope you will be intrigued by the subject of the next Talking about Art.

This is a members only event. Presenters will talk about works of art that they have acquired and are special in some way to them. Hence the title “From my Walls”. You will see paintings and sculptures and maybe other kinds of artefact. Specifically, paintings by two landscape water-colourists, one working in Italy in the 18c and the other specialising in 20c Norfolk views, and works by a contemporary sculptor living in the Welsh Marches will be shown.

Judy Branston, Anna and I have signed up to show our objects and may be joined by one or two other presenters. May I tempt you to contribute? I can help with putting together the slide show. Email me on talkingart@theartssocietycotswolds.org.uk.

Two outstanding women artists : Artemisia Gentileschi and Rosa Bonheur

Two outstanding female artists: Artemisia Gentileschi and Rosa Bonheur

Born in 1593, Gentileschi was a most accomplished Italian Baroque painter. Producing professional work by the age of 15 at a time when women had few opportunities to pursue artistic training or work as professional artists, Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. Overcoming the most difficult personal circumstance in her teens, she became a renowned painter of women, depicting them with a fine sense of drama, colour and naturalism.

Born in 1822 into a family of artists in Bordeaux, Gironde, Rosa Bonheur is best known for her painting of animals. Her mother, a piano teacher, and her father, a landscape artist, encouraged her in this work. In her 20’s, she had great success with Ploughing in the Nivernais, a Government Commission. In 1885, she completed her most famous work, the monumental The Horse Fair. She gained fame in the UK and North America and was the first woman to be awarded Officer of the French Legion of Honour. Outspoken about her personal life, she often wore male attire not because she wanted to be a man but to claim their power and freedom.
