A Golden Age in Danish Painting

A golden age in Danish painting

In July, Graham and Lesley Hadley travelled to Skagen, a remote village at the northern tip of Denmark. This was the heart of a flourishing artistic colony from the end of the 1800s. Graham will present three key figures: P.S. Krøyer, Anna and Michael Ancher. He’ll focus on Krøyer’s portrayal of the place and its people, Anna’s depiction of social and domestic life and Michael’s portrayal of the fishermen, the village’s economic backbone. Meanwhile, in Copenhagen, Vilhelm Hammershøi was developing his portraiture and exploration of apartment interiors. Anna Aveline will introduce his work.

Here and There

Talking about Art over Zoom

Wednesday 18 February 1045-1200

To counter the often dreary days of February, we offer rural scenes from the South Downs and brilliant sunlight from Sicily, the here and there of the event title.

Brian Etheridge will tell us about Eric Ravilious (1903-42), a versatile artist, best known for his work as a war artist and for his watercolours of Sussex and Wiltshire, cool in colour and imaginative in composition. He was also a superb wood engraver and painter of domestic scenes. He died young, being the first British war artist to die on active service in World War II.

Carolyn Walton and Alison Morgan share personal highlights from last autumn’s tour to Sicily. The east coast of Sicily offered scintillating views and Baroque architecture to die for: from an Arts and Crafts villa with literary connections, via a Roman villa with amazing mosaics, into the Greek temple foundations of Syracuse’s cathedral, to the Baroque loveliness of Scili with Montalbano connections and a romantic villa.

Favourite Exhibitions of 2025 and top tips for 2026

Wednesday January 28 1045-1200 over Zoom

Did you know that Edvard Munch was a talented portraitist? The National Portrait Gallery had a rare showing of paintings of friends and family by this troubled man.

With wealth from international trading, Oskar Reinhart formed a wonderful collection of art in the 1920’s. We will look at four choice items from the Courtauld exhibition Goya to Impressionism.

And feature the good fortune of a couple of us in buying a print from an art fair at the Saatchi Gallery.

Do send me your tips for must-see exhibitions in 2026.
